A Structural Insulated Panel, or SIP, is a composite building material. It consists of an insulating rigid core sandwiched between two layers of structural panels, and is often used in floors, walls and roofs for either residential or light commercial buildings.
SIPs were added to the International Residential Code, or IRC, in 2009. The code specifies applicability limits and production materials (core, facing, adhesive, lumber, screws and nails). In the 2015, Section R610 requires that all structural insulated panels be manufactured under a quality control program verified by an approved third-party quality assurance agency. Each structural insulated panel must be identified by a certificate of inspection or grade mark issued by the approved quality assurance agency as part of a certification program to ensure code compliance.

Our 'Engineered Design of SIP Panels' white paper offers all the most current design practices for working with SIP Panels (you can read the Design Guide here). NTA is accredited by the International Accreditation Service, or IAS, as a product certification agency in accordance with ISO/IEC 17065 for SIPs. In fact, the DIY network chose NTA to perform SIP testing for the television series "Deconstruction"!
In 2009, NTA partnered with the Structural Insulation Panel Association, or SIPA, to design a comprehensive certification code report for their members. We can issue a report showing code compliance for your structural insulated panel. While the IRC covers only SIPs used in walls, with a thickness of 4-1/2 or 6-1/2 inches and a span of 8 to 12 feet, NTA can provide alternate certification for SIPs used in floors and roofing, as well as spans exceeding 12 feet. Our program (learn about our SIP Certification Program here) is highly customizable. We work with and certify SIPs that utilize a variety of facing, core materials and adhesive bonding systems. We offer additional code compliance testing and certification for:
